How do we rank secondary schools?

We love data. We also want to help you make a hassle-free, informed choice for your secondary-aged child.

We’ve researched and analysed only the most up to date, official government figures for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (including GCSE and A-Level results), alongside the latest Ofsted inspection reports, accurate admissions mapping and parental insights so we can give you the best picture of how secondary schools in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland perform.

Our exclusive Star Rating also includes important progress scores which show how much progress pupils made between the end of Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 3 and by the end of Key Stage 5.

Our League Tables offer exclusive data that you won’t find anywhere else online. Some League Tables often focus too narrowly on academic achievement, but our School Guide Star Rating uses a range of data not just exam results.

For state secondary schools, we rank by our School Guide Star Rating and also display the follow data points which go into the rating algorithm:

Percentage pupils achieving 5+ GCSEs 9-4 including English and Maths
Average Point Score (A level)

Simply click on the school’s name to view the full data set and all the data points that went into the ranking. Not only will you be able to check how likely you are to get in based on up-to-date admissions data, but you can also view detailed exam results that the government no longer publishes.

For more information on the data we use to rank schools, visit About School Guide.

Accurate and reliable Secondary School League Tables

Pioneered by School Guide back in 2015 with exclusive government data and used by Rightmove, we have the most tried and tested catchment area heat maps that over 10 million parents in England, Wales and Scotland have used to locate their nearest school.

School Guide’s unbiased and user-friendly league tables are also regularly featured in the press as a go-to report on school performance. Our comprehensive school data sets have also been used by leading UK websites such as Mumsnet.

Do you show League Tables for all types of schools?

Yes, we have the Top 200 Primary Schools and the Top 200 Independent Schools, and we explain how we use the School Guide Star Rating to rank these schools with the data that is specific to their stage of education.
