School Description

West Park School is larger than the average-sized secondary school. It converted to become an academy in April 2011. At its previous inspection, the school was judged to be outstanding. The large majority of pupils are White British, with a lower than average proportion from minority ethnic backgrounds. Few pupils speak English as an additional language. The proportion of pupils supported by the pupil premium, which is additional funding for pupils in local authority care, and those known to be eligible for free school meals, is average. The proportion of pupils who have special educational needs or disability is above average. The school meets the government floor standards, which are the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress in English and mathematics by the end of Year 11. Currently one pupil attends off-site alternative provision at the Kingsmead Centre. The headteacher is a national leader of education. He and other leaders provide support to other schools locally.

The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.

West Park School Reviews

Average Rating:

BY PARENTS, FOR PARENTS

“Amazing”
AUTHOR:
"> Great school! Brilliant teachers, nice students and high expectations for all. I highly recommend this school.
“Fantastic School, West Park Spondon”
AUTHOR:
"> This is an excellent school. We moved our child to West Park from another school and are so glad we did. West Park has high expectations of all their pupils and provides them with a strong sense of self belief and self worth. Standards of behaviour are high and this allows the teachers and pupils to focus on learning. Our child has flourished in this school and is now a confident child always eager to do well.
“Major failures”
AUTHOR:
"> I wasnt allowed to give no stars but would never recommend this school to anyone. All they are interested in are grades not the child as a person. Please think before sending your child here. It looks all very good on paper and they can definitely talk the talk but it's all for show.
“Academic atmosphere”
AUTHOR:
"> We like West Park school and feel lucky to attend although we have to go out of our way to get there. Most importantly, our daughter loves it there. She likes the atmosphere, which encourages learning and focuses on grades.
