School Description

The school is larger than the average-sized secondary school for pupils from 11 to 16 years. The school is a mixed comprehensive school in the local authority of Lancashire. The proportion of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds is lower than average, as is the proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language. Pupils are predominantly of White British heritage. The proportion of pupils who are disadvantaged and supported by the pupil premium is above average. A number of pupils are supported through the Year 7 catch-up premium. The proportion of pupils with SEND is below the national average, as is the proportion of pupils who have an education, health and care plan. The school currently uses alternative provision at Coal Clough Academy to contribute to the education of a small number of key stage 4 pupils. Inspection report: Unity College, 6–7 November 2018 Page 9 of 11 Information about this inspection Inspectors observed teaching and learning across a wide range of subjects in different year groups. Some observations were undertaken jointly with senior leaders. In addition, inspectors made a number of other short visits to lessons, assemblies and other activities. Inspectors met with pupils to listen to their views, both formally and informally. Inspectors observed pupils at breaktimes, lunchtimes, in assemblies, in lessons and at the end of the school day. Inspectors looked at pupils’ work in lessons and looked at a sample of their books jointly with leaders. Meetings were held with the headteacher, other senior leaders, middle leaders, newly and recently qualified teachers and a representative of the local authority. Inspectors also met with members of the governing body and spoke with other agencies who work regularly with the school. Inspectors scrutinised a wide range of documentation that covered: information about pupils’ attainment and progress; the school’s self-evaluation and its improvement plan; minutes of meetings of the governing body and records relating to pupils’ attendance and behaviour and the safeguarding of pupils. Inspectors considered the views expressed by parents in the 75 responses to Ofsted’s online survey, Parent View, as well as the comments received via the free-text facility on Parent View. Inspectors also spoke with a parent in school. Inspectors took into account the 38 responses to a questionnaire for pupils and the 44 responses to a questionnaire for staff. How many pupils attending the school live in the area?

The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.
