Treloar School is a non-maintained special school for pupils aged between 2 and 19 who have multiple and complex disabilities that require specialist teaching, therapy and care. It is managed by The Treloar Trust and a local governing board. Since the last inspection there has been a change of principal. A newly appointed headteacher came into post in January 2018. All pupils have an education, health and care plan for their special educational need. In addition to their prime need, approximately half of the pupils are non-verbal. On entry to the school, most pupils’ attainment is typically below or well below levels that are typical for their age. A few pupils have hearing or visual impairments, or an acquired Inspection report: Treloar School, 16–17 January 2018 Page 9 of 12 brain injury. Some pupils have degenerative and/or life-limiting conditions. Since the last inspection, the school has admitted pupils into Reception and key stage 1. The nursery has extended its operation from one to three days a week. Almost all pupils are placed in the school by their local authorities. A small number of pupils are privately funded. Most pupils are of White British heritage, with a much smaller than average proportion of students from minority ethnic groups. There are similar numbers of boys and girls in the school. The school has a lower-than-average proportion of pupils who are eligible for pupil premium funding. The school does not use any alternative provision. The school meets the regulations for non-maintained special schools.
