St Marys C of E Primary and Nursery, Academy, Handsworth is larger than the averagesized primary school. The school converted to become an academy in February 2013. When Ofsted last inspected the predecessor school, it judged it as ‘outstanding’. The school is a stand-alone academy. It is governed by a board of trustees who are accountable for all aspects of the school’s performance. A new headteacher took up post in January 2018. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is above the national average. The proportion pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities is above the national average. The proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language is above the national average. Those from minority ethnic backgrounds represent a larger proportion of pupils than that seen nationally. The school meets the government’s current floor standards, which are the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of Year 6.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the last School Census (released annually in July).

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

"> Great school. My child loves it. The teaching is robust but fair and timely. Great Head Teacher who comes across firm but has the utmost respect from parents and children. She appears to accept ONLY the best and implementation programmes and opportunities for children to explore and achieve their full potential. Loving the new uniform that makes the children look really smart. One gets the feeling it is a fee paying school and we are grateful for the opportunities to excel.
