School Description

St Martin’s is a small, non-selective independent day school for boys and girls aged two to 11 years. There are currently 145 pupils on roll, including in the Kindergarten. The school offers care before, and after, school. The vast majority of pupils come from the local town and surrounding areas. The school is located in a large former private home, with large grounds that offer ample opportunities for physical education and outdoor learning. The early years provision is in a separate building on the same site as the main building. The school was last inspected in May 2013. The school does not make use of any alternative provisions for its pupils.

BEST SCHOOL IN BRITAIN! - SUNDAY TIMES 2020

The Sunday Times has named St Martin’s Preparatory School as the Best Primary School in the United Kingdom for 2020.

Each year, the Sunday Times publishes its Parent Power Schools Guide in which it identifies the highest-achieving schools in the UK, ranking them based on recent examination results.  For over a decade, St Martin’s has been steadily climbing the national rankings.  After spending the last five years rising through the top twenty places, we have finally reached the number one place in the country.

This exceptional result sees us eclipsing the UK’s ‘big named’ schools, a remarkable achievement, especially as we do not set entrance examinations and keep school fees to well below half the national average.

Our Headmistress, Miss Harris, is thrilled with the result and attributes the school’s success to focusing on tailoring learning to each pupil as an individual:

‘It is wonderful to be recognised as the Top Performing Prep and Primary School in the UK.  We concentrate on our pupils’ happiness and everything else falls into place – I think of our school as a greenhouse, not a hothouse.  By creating a warm and stimulating environment for pupils, they develop genuine inquisitiveness and a passion for learning.  This means that we are not only successful in examinations, our pupils blossom into happy, well-rounded individuals, destined for success.’
