This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Staff are ambitious for all pupils and have created a culture of excellence. Pupils take pride in attending this school and rise to staff expectations. They are highly motivated and committed to their learning. Pupils achieve exceptionally well, including in national assessments. Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary. Through the ‘Ranelagh Student Learner Profile,’ staff support pupils to develop character traits, such as creativity, independence and resilience. This helps to prepare pupils for success in their learning and life beyond school. The school cares for pupils and keeps them safe. Pupils have access to various levels of support if they have any concerns. These include pastoral staff, counsellors and use of ‘The Space’ if pupils need some time out or to talk through their worries. Pupils benefit from the extensive offer of extra-curricular clubs, educational trips and activities. Staff tailor this offer to pupils’ needs and interests. For example, pupils can take part in sports teams which play in less competitive fixtures and join one of the three choirs. Pupils have opportunities to develop skills, such as leadership, initiative and teamwork. For instance, house captains organise various competitions across the school and many pupils take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

“Poor management and a lack of transparency about results”

unlock
"> Poor management and a lack of transparency about their real results. Media. Health and social care and combined science just to name a few missing. Not coursework subjects have low grades and there were a lot more then 11 who took French. My experience has left me seriously concerned about the management and transparency of Ranelagh School. The school presents a very positive picture of itself on its website, including selected examination statistics and repeated references to its Outstanding Ofsted judgements. However, I believe parents should be able to see a much clearer and more complete picture of examination performance rather than having to search elsewhere for the detailed figures. For example, the school's website prominently highlights its 2024 results, while the more recent 2024/25 figures show a different picture across some measures. That does not mean the published figures are false, but it does raise a reasonable question about why the full and most recent results are not presented more prominently and consistently. I am also concerned about management, communication with parents and the handling of individual pupil issues. In my experience, getting clear answers and accountability has been unnecessarily difficult. A school can have an Outstanding Ofsted inspection and still need to be open to legitimate questions about management, communication, examination arrangements and transparency. Parents deserve access to the complete information so they can make their own informed assessment. I would encourage prospective parents to look beyond the school's headline statistics and Ofsted rating, examine the underlying performance data, and ask detailed questions about how the school handles concerns and communicates with families. They target kids and when you meet management would you want to spend hours a day with them.
