School Description

Focus School Biggleswade Campus is a co-educational day school of special religious character, situated in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Biggleswade in Bedfordshire. It is formed from two previous schools (one secondary and the other primary) that have now closed in Barnet and Cheshunt and some pupils have transferred from a Focus school in Dunstable. The school currently provides continuing education for 158 pupils between the ages of 7 and 18. There are 67 boys and 91 girls on roll. Two pupils have a statement of special educational need and a further thirty-six are identified by the school as having varying degrees of special learning needs. Thirty-seven pupils are identified as being able, gifted or talented (AGT). No pupils have English as an additional language (EAL). Converted from former commercial premises, the buildings and grounds now have the character of a purpose-built school. This is the first full Independent School Inspection of the school since it was opened September 2014 but it received a Material Change inspection on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) in October 2014. Summary of main findings: Focus School Biggleswade Campus has quickly become established as a thriving and successful school as a result of the clear vision of the trustees and school’s management, supported by the hard-working staff. It provides an outstanding quality of education. All aspects of the buildings and premises reflect a high standard. The development of the buildings and the school site has been strongly supported by the community as a whole, including parents and older pupils. The vast majority of pupils and their parents confirm their strong support for their school. The curriculum, teaching and assessment are excellent. All pupils make at least good and some make exceptional progress. Provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent. Pupils of all ages say that they like being at the school and confirm that they feel well cared for. The trustees have ensured that all matters related to pupils’ welfare, health and safety and safeguarding are assured by the school’s excellent provision and understand their responsibilities in these respects well. What the school does well:  it provides a very high quality environment for learning; 3  relationships are excellent between teachers and their pupils; and  both the curriculum and teaching have strong influences on enabling pupils to think and learn independently which has a positive influence on their progress and achievement.
