The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Pupils learn together, live together and thrive at Old Swinford Hospital. Pupils behave well. They are polite, respectful and studious. Pupils know that staff expect them to work hard and do their best. In lessons, they listen to their teachers and work together productively and collaboratively. Pupils’ academic and wider study prepares them for life after school. Staff and pupils get on well together. New pupils and students are warmly welcomed when they join. Leaders have made sure that the Year 7 girls who joined in September 2021 have settled into school. The school is a strong community and staff are proud of the care they provide. Pupils are thoughtful and conscientious. They repeatedly told inspectors that bullying was seldom an issue. Should it occur, they know that staff will deal with it quickly. One parent’s comment reflected the views of many, ‘The teachers and staff are supportive, nurturing and strive for the children to reach their full potential.’ Staff place a great emphasis on school life outside the classroom. Pupils choose from the broad and varied range of activities on offer. Staff encourage all to take part, and most do. Pupils enjoy and value these opportunities.

Old Swinford Hospital (OSH for short) is a happy, vibrant and distinctive school where tradition, community and values sit comfortably alongside innovation.  We welcome Boarders and Day Students aged 11-18.

As a state boarding school, we are proud to offer the academic and co-curricular facilities comparable to that of private education at a fraction of the fee; fees which are not subject to VAT.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ for boarding by Ofsted, OSH is a community of many parts.  Welcoming students from across the UK and overseas, diversity of life and individuality are embraced.

Boarding is at the heart of our community where students live together, learn together and thrive.  Learning to live – not simply work – alongside one another is a skill that cannot be underestimated.  Boarders develop great resilience, independence and genuine confidence; show humility and aspiration; and grow lifelong friendships.

Tailored Boarding invites boarders to stay over in school whenever suits, be that full-time during the term, Monday to Friday, or the occasional night.  You have the flexibility to fit school and extra-curricular clubs around your busy family lifestyle, knowing your child is safe and surrounded by friends.

Flexi-Boarding enables families living closer to school to access facilities before and after school, from 7am to 7pm with students returning home each evening.  Flexi-Boarders do not routinely stay over but can have sleepovers up to four times per term if they wish.

Extensive sports facilities mean many teams hold regional or national titles. Our 1st XV rugby team are John Fisher State School Festival champions, and we are named in The Cricketer Schools Guide Top State Schools. Plus with 45 co-curricular clubs and 10 music ensembles; excellent STEM laboratories; and new design and technology spaces teaching kitchen and two climbing walls; and new art, drama and dance studios, there’s plenty to get involved with.

Academically, OSH ranks highly nationally.  Complimented with focussed careers guidance and work experience, and later individual support for university, apprenticeship or employment applications we help prepare students for their futures.

Our ethos is to support students in developing the attributes required to make a difference.  We understand their individual and collective personalities, help each find their voice, and watch with pride as they grow.

As student Maisie-Grace says, “No matter who you are, you always have a place at OSH

We warmly invite you to visit

There’s simply no better way to experience what life at OSH is like than by sampling our school and community first-hand.  Find out more about our open events at www.oshsch.com/admissions/openevents
