This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Gladstone Primary School is a nurturing and inclusive community that recognises the individual needs of pupils and their families well. Leaders ensure that all school improvement activities are backed by appropriate evidence, gained through ongoing enquiry and research. The headteacher and governors engage staff at all levels in the ongoing evaluation of teaching and learning across the school. Staff take part in a range of research activities to help them reflect upon and improve the quality of their teaching. Well-designed learning areas enable pupils of all ages to develop and apply skills through a range of engaging activities. Teachers’ use of the outdoor learning environment across the younger classes is innovative and highly effective. In combination, the quality of teaching and the learning experiences provided support most pupils to make good progress in many aspects of their learning whilst at the school. Staff provide high quality support for pupils and their families. Leaders ensure that all staff receive suitable training that is responsive to and closely matched to the needs of all pupils, including those with additional learning needs (ALN) and those from low-income households. Through a wide range of partnerships, leaders and staff build effective teams around pupils and their families, breaking down barriers to learning successfully. Leaders have introduced a new approach to teaching mathematics that is beginning to have a positive impact on the ability of younger pupils to understand and use number. In the older classes, teachers do not consider the individual abilities of their pupils well enough and as a result, many older pupils do not receive the appropriate level of challenge or support during mathematics lessons. Most teachers model spoken Welsh appropriately and provide pupils with regular opportunities to rehearse Welsh words and sentence patterns. However, opportunities for pupils to apply this learning in conversation are limited and as a result, most pupils across the school, lack confidence when speaking Welsh. Currently, the school is in a very difficult financial situation. The school is in the process of developing a financial recovery plan to present to the local authority.
