School Description

East Wickham is a large, successful Primary Academy, with a warm and caring atmosphere. We are situated on a beautiful green site and have access to a large field that is shared between both buildings. At the rear of the school we overlook East Wickham open space, which gives our setting a very semi-rural feel. The school buildings have a main corridor with a wing at either end. The classrooms are large and airy. They are well equipped for children to learn and have bright attractive displays of children’s work. Reception and Year 1 classrooms all have an inviting role play area, as we value the importance of learning and developing through play. The hall is used for assemblies as well as PE and games lessons and for the children to eat their lunch. The library areas have a wide stock of reference books and are also used for small group teaching. We cover the whole of the Primary and Foundation Stage Curriculum, and offer a wide range of enrichment activities. These include outside visits and invited visitors and performers into school. Our staff actively support our Parents’ Association, who organise many fun fundraising activities throughout the year to benefit our school and our children. Children move from the KS1 building to the KS2 building at the end of Year 2. We have a comprehensive transition programme which allows the children get to know the KS2 building and teachers. This ensures their move is a happy and relatively stress free process. Year 3 pupils are invited back to KS1 events such as the Christmas production. Our children are very caring towards each other and the community. They regularly raise money for a number of local and national charities, including some international charities. We have a School Council to enable the children to have a say in how the school is run for their benefit. We believe the education of every child is very much a partnership between home and school, and therefore we endeavour to maintain good communication between school and parents.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.
