This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

School Description

Ysgol Dyffryn Ardudwy is a happy and welcoming school that prioritises the well-being of pupils and staff well. The school’s inclusive ethos supports nearly all pupils to behave exceptionally well and treat others with respect and care. Most pupils are very proud of their school and apply themselves fully to learning and play experiences. They have a genuine interest in their learning and, as a result, most make appropriate progress during their time at the school. However, there are very few opportunities for them to lead their own learning independently. Since being appointment fairly recently, the headteacher has built on the team ethos that exists across the school. She has set out energetically to improve the quality of the learning environment and the range of opportunities available to pupils. As a result, they engage in a good range of beneficial learning experiences, including competing in various competitions and working with engaging digital project experts. However, the school’s self-evaluation processes are not incisive enough to influence teaching and learning effectively enough. Staff have an effective working relationship with pupils and support their Welsh language skills successfully. Overall, they question and support pupils to deepen their understanding and develop their skills beneficially. However, teachers have a tendency to over-direct learning, which hinders pupils’ ability to lead their own learning. Learning experiences also do not provide enough challenge and opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge, understanding and skills across the curriculum regularly enough.
