Ysgol Bro Pedr is an inclusive and welcoming community where most pupils behave respectfully and show a positive attitude to learning. Staff build secure relationships with pupils and create an environment where many pupils concentrate well and make suitable progress, with a minority making strong progress. A very strong emphasis is placed on the pupil’s voice and, as a result, many pupils develop valuable personal and social skills. The ‘senedd’ and discussion forums have a significant influence on the life and work of the school. Most teachers have good subject knowledge, use a range of effective strategies and deliver stimulating lessons. Pupils are given beneficial opportunities to develop their reading and numeracy skills across the curriculum and this has a positive effect on their development. However, written feedback by teachers is not always detailed enough to help pupils to improve the quality of their work. Pupils develop a wide range of skills in a variety of contexts. Many write clearly in a variety of genres, such as news reports and speeches. From the foundation phase onwards, pupils use their digital skills confidently, by creating good quality animations and using specialist software to present their work. Pupils also benefit from a rich programme of extracurricular activities, including educational trips, clubs and experiences that broaden their horizons. Canolfan y Bont provides an exceptionally inclusive and responsive learning environment for pupils aged 11-19 with profound and complex needs. Teaching is based on personal and holistic principles, and takes into account the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of each individual. As a result, nearly all pupils make good progress from their starting points. Many pupils use the Welsh language confidently in Welsh-medium sessions. In English-medium sessions, teachers do not encourage pupils enough to use incidental Welsh and many turn to English too quickly in informal situations. The leadership of the headteacher and the leadership team is strong and purposeful, and ensures that everyone is given an opportunity to learn and succeed in an inclusive and ambitious environment. Leaders respond promptly to self-evaluation findings and make specific adjustments that lead to decisive progress. Although pupils’ attendance compares fairly well with the levels nationally, they remain too low.
