This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Eirwg is part of the Ffederasiwn y Ddraig federation, which was formed in September 2019. Together with Ysgol Gymraeg Pen y Pîl, they create a successful learning community that celebrates Welshness, provides care and respect well and offer valuable experiences for pupils. Pupils’ pride in their school, their local area and Wales is a strong identity within the learning environment. The headteacher, with the effective support of the heads in charge, co-operates well and provides clear leadership which contributes effectively to consistency in provision and to pupils’ all-rounded education. The close working relationship between Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern’s cluster schools contributes further to the sense of effective co-operation and sharing which is a strong element of this leadership. Staff are committed to providing high quality care and well-being for pupils within a supportive environment across the school. This influences pupils’ behaviour and attitudes towards each other and adults successfully. The federation’s self-evaluation and planning for improvement arrangements are effective. The school uses information gathered skilfully to develop their provision further. For example, leaders have successfully evaluated the effect that developing a purposeful and stimulating learning environment has had on the youngest pupils’ curiosity, enjoyment and confidence in their learning. This is one of the school’s strengths. Teachers plan purposeful opportunities for pupils to develop a strong sense of belonging to their community and to Wales. They place a strong emphasis on providing a range of valuable and interesting experiences that build effectively on pupils’ development and broaden their horizons well. Teachers plan purposefully to provide opportunities for pupils to take part in a variety of interesting activities both inside and outside the classroom. On entry to the school, nearly all pupils have Welsh speaking skills that are below what is expected. During their time at the school, most make sound progress in their communication, mathematics and digital skills and, by the end of their time at the school, they develop to speak confidently in both Welsh and English. Many pupils’ reading skills develop appropriately; however, they do not always understand the meaning of text when reading in Welsh. Most pupils show mature respect towards the way they present their work, their care and handwriting skills are a strong feature. Provision to support the learning skills of pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) is extremely effective. As a result, most make good progress over time. Maintaining a proactive relationship with all families is a priority for the headteacher and staff and this is reflected in the swift response to occasional cases. This contributes effectively to strengthening the good working relationship between the school and parents.
