The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

You and your leadership team have maintained a good standard of education and built on the school’s strengths. Leaders, governors, teaching staff, support staff and pupils have embraced the need for continued improvement. Consequently, the progress pupils make continues to rise. You have carefully planned improvements so that pupils benefit from a rich curriculum and provide pupils with an increasing range of opportunities to choose from. The majority of senior leaders have been appointed to their current roles since the previous inspection. They bring with them the skills that the school needs to continue its journey of improvement and are passionate about improving the life chances of every pupil. The investment in training for middle leaders is bearing fruit. This was an area for improvement at the previous inspection. As a result of these actions, pupils are achieving more highly and an increasing number of pupils want to join the school and the sixth form. At the previous inspection, you were also challenged to improve the quality of teaching for the most able and use questioning to deepen pupils’ learning. Although these have improved, you rightly note that there is more work to do in both areas. You were also tasked with improving the quality of feedback and this has been tackled well. Pupils now routinely correct and edit their work. This means they have a clearer understanding of the topic and have the information they need to refer to when preparing for assessments.

“Good start to year 7”

unlock
"> My year 7 child loves it and so I am happy. She clearly enjoys subjects she never liked before because tutors make it fun and she is beginning to excel. I will be watching her progress closely but it's been a great start to secondary school and I am impressed.
“Excellent school”

unlock
"> Wyedean is an inspirational school with student happiness and well-being at its core. Since my son started in September, we have all been most impressed with how friendly everyone is from support staff to senior students; the encouragement, guidance and high expectations from teaching staff; and the range of opportunities presented which include regular sporting events and cross-curricular projects such as fund-raising projects for local charities. It is heart-warming that at the heart of the school's ethos is the desire to produce well-rounded students where life-long qualities such as resilience and stamina for learning are as important as exam results.
“We're all very happy”

unlock
"> Very happy. My son is in Year 8 and thriving on the academic rigour and challenge. He is very ambitious, and supported by all members of staff to achieve his very best. Fantastic pastoral care and a huge range of extra-curricular activities to participate in: this is not a school that cares only about results, but about your child as an individual, helping them to grow into caring, global citizens. I look forward to my daughter joining shortly!
“Caring staff but growing problems”

unlock
"> My 3 children went to this school. Very mixed views of the school. Teachers and other staff are on the whole very caring and really give 100% to help the students. However, from my eldest being in the school to the youngest, I have really seen a decline in the behaviour of the students. My youngest is struggling a lot due to issues with her so-called friends. Very little support or help from the school. Left her with dreadful low self esteem and self worth. She's recently been fast-tracked for counselling by our doctor. The sad thing is that chatting to other mums there seems to be nothing done in the school to prevent bad behaviour from continuing. Monitoring, monitoring but little action.
“A school to recommend”

unlock
"> Wyedean is a great school, the pupils talk about the school as a community, my son has just started in year 7 and I was so impressed when they held a year 7 music concert within a few months of him starting. The focus was superbly on giving each child a platform and very much celebrating each of their talents, efforts and team work. So far all of my contact with the school has been positive, my son is very happy so far and has clearly been supported to make friends and feel at home. The new leadership team are very positive, full of great ideas and vision, this is definitely a school to recommend.
“The best start for the next generation”

unlock
"> The level of commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated by the staff and leadership team is clearly evident from the reciprocal enthusiasm of the pupils. The school has an atmosphere of productivity, progress and happiness which in all provides the pupils with a fantastic facility for learning and achieving.
“Fantastic School”

unlock
"> Fantastic School, great results. Not all about results though as all staff get the best out of the students irrespective of ability.
“On the up!”

unlock
"> This is an exciting school where students are given an excellent allround education - mandarin and latin are now on offer
“Going places!”

unlock
"> This school has a strong management team and is making significant progress under the leadership of the new Head Teacher. Both staff and students are highly motivated and the school is is on track for an outstanding grade in the next inspection.
“Wyedean EXCELLENT”

unlock
"> An excellent school. There have been significant improvements in recent years, that continue with a new Headteacher, new Deputy and new Chair of Governors. Superb A level results that put the school in the top 10% of schools nationally (according to website), strong GCSE results (over the last 2 years especially), really positive and conscientious Staff who are working hard to improve all aspects. Good website and communications via Twitter and Facebook. My daughter loves school and her friends are happy. No bullying, really wide range of extra-curricular activities, growing international links and lots of trips and events. We are amazed the school was ever in Special Measures! Very positive atmosphere around the school when we visited unannounced last year.
