School Description

William Edwards School is larger than the average-sized secondary school. When its predecessor school was inspected by Ofsted in 2010, it was judged to be outstanding. The school converted into an academy in 2011. It became the lead school in the South West Essex Community Education Trust (SWECET) in 2015. Responsibility for the school’s performance lies with the trust board. There are currently four other schools in the trust. The trust is also sponsoring the creation of a free school, which is due to open in September 2020. Following the inspection of the predecessor school, a new headteacher took up post in 2010. He remained in this position, while also becoming chief executive officer (CEO) of the trust, until September 2018. The current headteacher took up the permanent role as headteacher from September Inspection report: William Edwards School, 1–2 May 2019 Page 8 of 11 2018. Prior to this, he had been the head of school, supported by the headteacher/CEO. The school is part of the Thurrock Teaching School Alliance (TTSA). The school uses two off-site providers for a small number of pupils as part of its curriculum provision. These are Impulse Leisure in Corringham and Choice Training in Dagenham. This inspection began as a no formal designation inspection of an exempt school under section 8 of the Education Act. This was because of concerns about standards and the leadership and management of standards at the school.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

William Edwards School Reviews

Average Rating:

"> My daughter attended this school and her time there was extremely happy. The teachers were very supportive and were willing to always devote extra time to help her with subjects she struggled with. I cannot fault it one bit and she is a very rounded young lady in her dream job now. Well done to the school.
“Nothing to write home about”
"> In my opinion as a parent of a school currently attending, this school lacks the ambition to fulfil its potential. Simple things like school lockers are not available. Nothing is available after 3pm: no library, no computers, no teachers. Instead "older" kids are on hand - often with little or no more experience than the kids needing help. The performance of the school if you look at the GCSE ratings is way below what you'd expect if you read the OFSTED report. If you send your child here and have ambition for your child, please make sure you look up the local tutor to augment your child's learning.
