This is the school’s first section 5 inspection since it was judged to require improvement in March 2017. The school is smaller than average. The proportion of pupils with SEND who receive support is well above average. The proportion of pupils known to be eligible for the pupil premium or who have a statement of SEN or an education, health and care plan is average. The proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language is below average. The school uses St-Eds to provide alternative provision for a small number of pupils. Inspection report: University Technical College Norfolk, 14 to 15 May 2019 Page 8 of 10 Information about this inspection Inspectors held meetings with the principal, senior leaders, middle leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and members of the governing body. Inspectors gathered a range of evidence to judge the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. Inspectors observed learning in 34 lessons, or parts of lessons. A wide range of pupils’ workbooks were looked at by inspectors throughout the inspection to assess both the quality of teaching and pupils’ progress over time. Inspectors spoke with pupils in class and around the school at breaktimes and lunchtimes to seek their views about the school. Inspectors met with two groups of pupils in formal meetings to discuss many aspects of school life. Inspectors made visits to morning registration sessions. Inspectors scrutinised the school’s website and a range of documents, including assessment information and the school’s own evaluation of its effectiveness. Inspectors also scrutinised leaders’ improvement plans and their records about behaviour, safeguarding and attendance. Inspectors considered the 85 responses and 25 free-text comments made by parents to the Ofsted online questionnaire, Parent View. Inspectors also considered the 35 responses by staff to the Ofsted staff questionnaire, and the 91 responses by pupils to the Ofsted pupils’ questionnaire. “Sadly a massive disappointment”

Appalling school. It was the worst decision, to send my son there. At the open evenings, it's sold as a progressive, positive experience, where children will learn engineering skills. In reality, poor equipment makes this difficult, and forget the promise of welding. That just doesn't happen at all. There is rarely a day, when I don't get a text informing me that my son has a detention. You may think he's a bad child, but actually he only had two in his previous school. At utcn, forgetting your green pen alone, will land you in detention. It's a constant nightmare. My son has had a full day of isolation in a cubicle, for simply asking a perfectly serious "what happens if" question on a search engine, just because the subject matter was about security. There is no encouragement of debate or creativity, which would be great in an engineering school. Save yourself the humiliation of having to move back to your previous school, when you realise the grass isn't just not greener, it's actually AstroTurf.
“Inspiring and Supportive”

Having struggled to feel motivated during years at local school, my daughter transferred in Y10 and has recently achieved remarkable grades in her GCSEs as well as having many inspirational trips, activities and opportunities to meet local employers. Now enjoying A level courses so far.

This college has failed my son. From what I've heard from several students, the teachers are extremely unreliable at turning up for lessons. My son has had three different teachers in one subject and countless supply teachers which has not helped with learning. I have spoken to students and parents and they all say that there is a lack of communication and that the head teacher does not get involved. Engineering practical work is a joke. High schools are capable of better work. I highly encourage people who are considering working at this "college" to stay well away.

When starting UTCN i thought we would be more involved with employers and being prepared for employment however i do not think we have been very involved with the employers. Organisation seems poor. I would have like to use the CNC machinery however all I and many other people have managed to accomplish is filing a piece of mild steel and tapping a steel rod. Having seen the machinery that was to be used at UTC, it gave me a false sense of how good the college was going to be. Now almost half way through the second year all I have been able to do is use a lathe. Even then they were constantly breaking. As an engineering college I expected much more and I am greatly disappointed. Teachers seem unorganised. The communication between the teachers and students isn’t that great. I was unaware of my progress in many of the engineering projects. In addition to this at the start of the year the organisation seemed poor and still is .as a former student at UTCN I would NOT recommend this college.

For more information, please see About and refer to the section, ‘Why does a school show 0% on its GSCE data dial? In many affected cases, the Average Point Score will also display LOW SCORE as points for iGCSEs and resits are not included.
