School Description

The Laurels Primary School converted to an academy on 1 September 2016. The school joined the New Horizons Trust, but in 2017, made the decision to change trusts, and on 1 January 2018 joined the Durrington Multi-Academy Trust. This is a small multi-academy trust. Beneath the board of trustees, there is a local governing body specifically focused on the Laurels Primary School. While retaining overall accountability, the board of trustees delegates many responsibilities and governance functions to the local governing body. Since the predecessor school was inspected, the school has converted from a first school to a primary school. Year 6 pupils were part of the school for the first time in 2018. The proportion of pupils with SEND is above average. The proportion with an education, health and care plan is in line with the average. There have been a considerable number of staff changes since the predecessor school Inspection report: The Laurels Primary School, Worthing, 6–7 February 2019 Page 9 of 12 was last inspected. The headteacher took up post in January 2018 and the majority of the teachers have joined the school within the last 18 months. Children in early years are taught in a full-time Reception class. The vast majority of pupils are White British, with very few who speak English as an additional language or belonging to other ethnic groups. The proportion of pupils supported by funding through the pupil premium is average. The school runs a breakfast club.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

The Laurels Primary School Reviews

“Removing our children”
"> We have been unfortunate enough to have our children attend this school for 6 years now but I can't imagine for the life of me why! A lot of the staff seem to feel the need to leave by spending a few months in another job whilst claiming sickness from the Laurels. This to me says alot about the pressured bullying culture and also has given enormous instability to our children. The senior team are not approachable, giving off a 'I'm too good to speak to you and I don't really like children' Vibe. They do not monitor the children's fluid in-take or ensure they are eating a reasonable amount of their lunch, even after repeated requests. Recently they have been asking personal and leading questions to our children with severe special needs without our consent, resulting in immense trauma and anguish at home. To sum it up, I wouldn't go near this place with a Gangrenous limb and we will be removing our Children ASAP!
