School Description

This large comprehensive school has its first specialist status subject in sports and as a High Performing Specialist School, gained a second specialism in Applied Learning in 2008. The school has recently been granted permission to develop post-16 provision for sports courses from 2010. The proportion of students from backgrounds other than White British is very low, as is the number with native languages other than English. The local authority acknowledges that local policy differs from most others nationally, so the relatively low proportion of students recorded as having higher levels of learning difficulty and/or disabilities does not reflect the real picture of additional educational needs within the school. Awards held by the school include the Chartermark and the Investors in People award.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

OUR SCHOOL

The Castle School has established an enviable record of academic success over many years and has been the recipient of several awards in recognition of this. It is not an exaggeration to say that we lead the way in many areas of educational achievement nationally. We are equally proud of the varied and vibrant extra-curricular life of our school which enriches the experience of our students.

The enhancement of the school's reputation has inevitably led to growth in student numbers and it is a very busy and lively place. It is even more important therefore, never to lose sight of the individuality of each student and the Houses, Lancaster, Balmoral, Sandringham, Caernarvon, Windsor and Buckingham, play an important part is ensuring that no child is invisible at The Castle School. The Houses give students a strong sense of inclusion and a confidence which helps them to meet the challenges of the wider world when they leave us. Many of our students join the House that their siblings belong to and this strengthens the strong sense of family and tradition that we engender at the school.
