School Description

Swavesey Village College is a larger than average sized secondary school with specialist status in science and languages. It serves Swavesey and a number of other villages that lie to the north of Cambridge. The school library is shared with the local community and the school provides a community education programme. The proportion of students with special educational needs and/or disabilities is broadly average. The proportion of students known to be eligible for free school meals is below average. A large majority of students are of White British heritage. Very few students are at an early stage of learning English. The college has been recognised through the Healthy Schools and International Schools Awards, Artsmark (Silver) and ICT Mark. The College is an Advanced Accredited Consultant School for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) and the Principal is a consultant headteacher and a National Leader of Education. Since the last inspection the school has become a foundation school within the Cambridge Meridian Educational Trust. Plans are well advanced for the school to become an academy.

The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.

Swavesey Village College Reviews

Average Rating:

“Many things to improve”
"> The school is quite average. The good thing about the school is the many after school clubs. Not so good is the high turnover rate of teachers. Especially at the start of this year a lot of good teachers have left. The new teachers seem less experienced. The school is also too obsessed with ratings. When your child is ill, they just worry about their attendance ratings in my opinion. Instead of helping the child to keep up with the lessons while at home by doing homework. Also the school does not have separate male /female toilets and the toilets are rather dirty. I always ask parents I meet what they think of the school. They give a negative answer. Which does not surprise me by now. The last complaint was from a mother whose child had lost her bus pass. Who was told her daughter could not take the bus without a pass (and they stopped handing out temporary passes). I can give more examples but overall the school does not impress me as a parent. I wish the school took an effort to improve instead of looking at Ofsted ratings.
