This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

How School Guide Rates Secondary Schools

The Welsh government has not published performance data for 2020, 2021 or 2022 for secondary schools.
The Minister for Education has confirmed they will return to publishing secondary school data in 2023.

School Guide uses a combination of data sources including new Estyn gradings to create its Star Ratings for 2023.

School Description

St Teilo’s Church-in-Wales High School is a mixed 11 to 18 comprehensive voluntary-aided school located in the city of Cardiff. There are currently 1,382 pupils on roll, with 260 in the sixth form. These figures represent a large increase since the time of the last inspection when there were 1,211 pupils on roll. The increasing roll is principally due to the local authority’s 21st Century Schools reorganisation plans. The school mainly takes pupils from the eastern side of Cardiff for denominational education. Just over 15% of pupils are entitled to free school meals, which is lower than the national average of 17.7%, although the proportion of these pupils entering the school is increasing quickly. Around 26.5% of pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas of Wales. The pupils entering the school represent the full range of ability. Around 16% have a special educational need. This figure is lower than the national average of 19.2%. Around 2.3% of pupils have statements of special educational needs. This figure is slightly lower than the national average of 2.5% for Wales as a whole. Around one in six pupils come from minority ethnic backgrounds and a similar proportion of pupils receive support to learn English as an additional language. A very small number of pupils speak Welsh as their first language. The acting headteacher has been in post since September 2013. Prior to her appointment to this role she had been a deputy headteacher at the school for seven years. A new deputy headteacher was appointed in September 2013. The school has five assistant headteachers, four of whom have been in post for over four years. The individual school budget per pupil for St Teilo's C.I.W. High School in 2013-2014 means that the budget is £4,218 per pupil. The maximum per pupil in the secondary schools in Cardiff is £12,929 and the minimum is £4,146. St Teilo's C.I.W. High School is 19th out of the 21 secondary schools in Cardiff in terms of its school budget per pupil.
