School Description

The school is an above-average-sized primary school. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is above the national average. A large majority of pupils come from a White British background. The proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language is below the national average. The proportion of pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities is above the national average. The school meets the government’s current floor standards, which are the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress in reading, writing and mathematics for pupils by the end of Year 6. The school is a sponsored academy and is part of the Diocese of Coventry multiacademy trust. The school converted to become an academy in July 2015. When its Inspection report: St Michael’s Church of England Academy, 5–6 June 2018 Page 9 of 12 predecessor school was last inspected by Ofsted in January 2014, it was judged to be inadequate. The chief executive officer, the head of education and the school improvement partner provide strategic support and challenge. This includes aspects such as finance, human resources, leadership, the quality of teaching, and performance data. The multiacademy trust also commissions an annual review, which is carried out by an independent adviser. There is a local governing body at the school which takes responsibility for challenging and supporting leaders to develop educational outcomes for pupils, as well as being a link to the local community.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the last School Census (released annually in July).

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the last School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.

BY PARENTS, FOR PARENTS

“Thankful Mother”
AUTHOR:
"> When we moved to the UK three years ago, I was really worried about sending my son to school. He spoke zero English and this was very scary for him. St Michael's assigned a Polish speaking teacher to him and in a very short time he was able to understand and take part. Once he had the basics, he started to make friends and slowly build his confidence. The teachers were also very supportive of me too, they kept me up to date with everything school related and let me know where he needed to improve. He has gone from a very shy and scared boy, to a confident boy who has achieved the expected grade in his SATs and is ready for secondary school. I cannot rate the teaching staff highly enough. They were friendly, welcoming and extremely supportive. They went above and beyond to help my son and I will always be grateful of the work that the teachers have done with my son. He couldn't have had a better start.
