The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

Source: All attending pupils Pupil Census

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Census collected by the Scottish Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

“By far, the best school in Perth”

"> I had moved my children from the local school to this school and have never regretted my decision. It is a brilliant school, with fantastic facilities, and the headteacher and deputies know all the children throughout the school by their names, so you can rest assured that the children are well cared for. The school itself has a great music department, several halls used for gym and drama, including one with a stage and full lighting equipment, tennis courts, astro pitch as well as lots more besides. The standard of teaching is high, and teachers are always aware of their pupil's individual needs and requirements. Staff from the high school regularly visit pupils in the primary to teach them in their specialised subjects such as French, Home Economics, PE and the children are encouraged to take on other interests such as learning to play an instrument, or join in the school teams. There is also great opportunities for travel to other countries whilst in the High school supporting the school's charitable work, or as part of the orchestra or other groups, and the children are invited to go on a European ski trip whilst in S2. The nursery is well run and has the modern facilities you would expect from the rest of the school. They regularly use the library within the school, as well as make use of the grounds and park close by, and the staff work hard to ensure the children are happy and learning whilst playing. Parents are regularly invited into the nursery to partake in activities with their kids such as storytime run by the library, creating things together etc, and staff enjoy showing parents how to make use of everyday things in the home to encourage their child to play and learn, and demonstrate what skills it is teaching their child. Having had my children at a local school in my area of Perth, and been very disappointed with the enthusiasm of the teachers for their profession, many of whom were absent a great deal throughout the year, the extreme lack of communication between staff there and parents, and the level of bullying that was being covered up by that particular school, I am so happy and contented with St John's, and cannot sing its praises enough as the gulf between St John's and my childrens' last school could not be any greater.
