The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. You and your team have reviewed and revised the curriculum during the past year in order to extend pupils’ learning. The impact of developments in the curriculum on pupils’ engagement in learning and on their enjoyment of school is clear. However, these relatively recent developments in the curriculum are not taught consistently across the school, leading to an element of variation in teaching and learning. Pupils make strong progress and achieve increasingly well. In 2018, standards at the end of key stage 1 were well above the national averages in reading, writing and mathematics, including at the higher standard. All groups of pupils achieve equally well in reading, including the most able and the small number of disadvantaged pupils. The proportion of pupils achieving greater depth in reading was more than double the national average in 2018. All pupils achieved the expected standard in science at the end of Year 2. Pupils of all ages behave exceptionally well in lessons and throughout the school. They have great fun playing with the extensive range of playground equipment available during playtimes and enjoy catching up with their friends. Consistently high expectations and strong relationships throughout the school underpin pupils’ growing confidence and their sense of security.

"> My daughter loved her time at Shere School. She left last Sept for middle school, and still misses her teachers. I feel my daughter was given the most wonderful start to her education – we could not have asked for better. As a family the school gave much more than an education, it is like an extended family. I am a mother of 4 other children and have been through the Surrey education system from nursery to college. I truly believe this school is one of the best I have ever come across. The teachers provide the most loving and caring environment possible for children and I can only say thank you so very much for there hard work.

"> Shere school is a brilliant place to send your child if you want a lovely, intimate village location, small & friendly classes and an outstanding education. My son is extremely happy here and loves the variety of topics and forest school activities that he participates in. Would highly recommend.

"> Both our children have been educated at Shere and we couldn't be more happy. Each child is made to feel special and welcome. Teaching standards are exceptional and this is reflected in the results across the board. They do things differently at Shere and achieve the very highest academic results. We have loved their cutting edge curriculum, Forest School and play based learning. Both our children have been extremely happy here. Following the closure of the village Nursery, the school even stepped forward to offer provision for every child.
