The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Leaders have strengthened the quality of education so pupils learn an ambitious curriculum. They have high expectations that ‘every minute is a learning minute’. Pupils say they are expected to work hard in lessons and try their best. Leaders provide wider experiences to enrich the curriculum, including the ‘Phizzi lab’, where pupils can conduct scientific experiments. Pupils value the care they receive from their trusted adults. Staff are warm and attentive towards pupils’ needs. Leaders ensure there is additional support, such as a nurture group and counselling, for pupils who need it. This helps pupils to be happy in school and feel safe. Pupils, for the most part, meet the very high expectations staff have of their behaviour. Staff help pupils to learn from their mistakes. Pupils are polite and respectful to adults and to their peers. Manners are commonplace. Pupils are adamant that bullying is extremely rare and trust adults to act on any problems quickly. Pupils have many responsibilities, including ‘tech wizards’, science ambassadors, writing the school newsletter and the ‘OPS squad’, which they appreciate. They know this helps them to be good role models and do the right thing. Pupils enjoy a range of extracurricular opportunities that have restarted, including clubs, which were hampered by COVID-19.

“An excellent school”

unlock
"> I have 2 children at Okehampton Primary School, one in year 3 and one in year 5. I have always found teachers to be of an excellent standard, my children have made fantastic progress year on year and really enjoy school life. I have always found teachers, including the head, approachable and available to discuss any issues if the need ever arises. The current head teacher is a strong leader who has really transformed the school, taking it from 'special measures' 6 years ago to being a 'good' Ofstead reviewed school currently. The school offers a great range of after school clubs in sports, arts and much more. Interventions are provided for children who are having difficulties as well as children who are excelling wither the regular 'Gifted and Talented' workshops. Overall, I am a happy parent with happy children who I believe attend a great school.
“Praise for Okehampton Primary School”

"> My little girl started in the school nursery and is now in Yr 1. I love the way the school communicates with me. My daughter is achieving, both academically and socially. She is starting to partake in after school clubs, equally these are run very professionally. I couldn't ask for more.
“Happy parent”

"> Fab school. My children love it. Staff are easy to talk to and head Mrs Fox is always able to answer any queries. The younger children always say the Head knows all their names without them having to tell her.
“Needs improving”

"> Not great. Results don't seem correct in comparison to early tests at secondary school. Poor communication skills from staff. In my opinion, it's time for head to move on so a fresh start for school.
