Oak Tree School is an independent special school situated on the outskirts of Truro. It is one of a number of schools operated by the proprietor, Acorn Care and Education Group. The school has a board of governors, chaired by the assistant director of education, but it is not the named proprietor on the register of independent schools. All pupils who attend the school have EHC plans. All pupils are placed at the school by the relevant local authority, with the vast majority by Cornwall Council. The school caters for pupils who have a range of SEN and/or disabilities. These include social, emotional and mental health needs, specific and moderate learning difficulties and Inspection report: Oak Tree School, 21–23 March 2018 Page 8 of 11 speech, language and communication needs. An increasing number of pupils have autism spectrum disorder. The school’s previous standard inspection took place on 17–19 March 2015, when its overall effectiveness was judged to be good. The school does not use alternative providers. Pupils undertake a wide variety of activities away from the school site, such as outdoor education, but are accompanied by staff from the school at all times.
This school is independently managed and its admission criteria may be selective. There is no set catchment area as pupils are admitted from a wide variety of postcodes and, in the case of boarding schools, from outside the UK. Due to number of reforms to GSCE reporting introduced by the government in 2014, such as the exclusion of iGCSE examination results, the official school performance data may not accurately report a school’s full results.
