School Description

When pupils join Lokrum Fields, staff support them to settle into school well. There is an individualised approach. This is developed with parents and carers and external specialists. There is a strong focus on developing pupils’ self-esteem and selfconfidence. This helps pupils to overcome earlier, negative school experiences. The school’s animals, a therapy dog and guinea pigs, play a central role in helping pupils to manage their own feelings when they are finding things difficult. Pupils access a broad range of subjects. Most lessons are well matched to their needs. Sometimes, however, the work does not challenge the pupils to learn as much as they could. Leaders are not always clear about what pupils are learning and how much progress they are making. Staff create opportunities to develop pupils’ interests and talents, for example through art, music and crochet. Leaders have recently introduced careers education, but this is in the very early stages of implementation. Pupils generally behave well. Almost all pupils who completed the pupil survey said that they enjoy school. They feel safe and have someone they can talk to if they have any worries. Bullying is very rare. Leaders follow up any incidents of perceived bullying.

Lokrum Fields Parent Reviews

Average Parent Rating

“Poorly managed”

I am a parent. My opinion is that while some of the staff are excellent, dedicated professionals, the school is let down by poor management. Rather than solutions being sought when a child is having difficulties, that child will be excluded or off-rolled, as some staff lack the skills to manage different presentations of autism. When the school does end a placement, the normal protections in law do not apply as it is an independent setting. This leads to disorganised transition out of placement which is stressful for the student and family. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the school.
“Would not recommend to anyone”

I am the parent of a child that has attended this setting. This setting has broken my child's heart. Lots of things are offered here but they don't materialise. The setting is dealing with extremely vulnerable children and families, and the coldness we've received defies belief.
“Disappointed”

Expectations were not met. The school is new and does not appear to be ready to provide what is offered on their website in our experience.

Review guidelines
  • Do explain who you are and your relationship to the school e.g. ‘I am a parent…’
  • Do back up your opinion with examples or clear reasons but, remember, it’s your opinion not fact.
  • Don’t use bad or aggressive language.
  • Don't go in to detail about specific staff or pupils. Individual complaints should be directed to the school.
  • Do go to the relevant authority is you have concerns about a serious issue such as bullying, drug abuse or bad management.
