School Description

Kings Oxford provides a contemporary alternative for ambitious students who are looking for a mature yet supportive learning environment. We provide a community in which students can express their own identity and explore their interests and we support them in becoming independent learners and responsible young adults. Teachers and students work together in partnership, on a first name basis without uniforms and assemblies, exploring the subject areas to gain an in-depth understanding of the course content, and to develop and apply transferable skills. Examination structure and techniques are assessed in detail, and personal strategies developed to maximise the results achieved. Learning is contextualised to facilitate understanding and provide inspiration for students in their choices for further studies and potential careers. This is augmented by a range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to add to our students' experience and university applications. Our team of personal tutors, welfare support team and UCAS advisors monitor every aspect of our students' personal and academic development. Students are guided through their exploration of the opportunities available to them at university; identifying the most relevant options for their individual interests, learning styles and ambitions, and ensuring they are fully prepared for the application process. This includes guidance and coaching for any additional assessment or interview requirements. We provide a range of GCSE and A-level programmes to enable ambitious students to achieve their full potential and aspirations.

Kings Oxford Reviews

Average Rating:

“A positive and mature place”
There were just 6 students in some of my daughter's classes, and the confidence she gained from that kind of attention at A level showed in her results. Her GCSEs were not exceptional, but Kings helped her gain a place at her first choice uni after doing A levels and then an Art Foundation. I was very impressed by the quality and commitment of the teaching, and I'm glad she made the move. She really matured during her time there, and overall we found the whole journey very positive. Highly recommended.

Meet the Head: Mike Smith

Mike Smith was appointed Principal of Kings Oxford, a college steeped in a rich culture of student achievement and excellence, in 2016. He has a wide experience in education and a variety of management and leadership responsibilities both in the UK and globally. His experience spans all phases of education from nursery to post-16 colleges, from special schools to mainstream, independent and private schools. He has been an OfSTED inspector since its inception and has inspected schools all over the world.

Who/what inspired you to become a teacher?

I was fortunate in my own school life to have had a number of vocational teachers who greatly supported my aspirations and sporting talents. The respect I held for these teachers stayed with me into adulthood and I went on to become a PE teacher. Later, I returned to university and studied psychology as I wanted to expand my teaching range.

What achievement are you most proud of as Head?

There is no greater feeling than seeing the eventual success of students as a direct outcome of managing and leading a team of dedicated staff.

What does a successful school look like to you?

Where the students are happy in their learning and where they rise to the challenge of high expectations and experience the euphoria of success from their endeavours.

What is the most important quality you want every child to have when they leave your school? And why?

It is the love of learning, combined with the understanding and appreciation of different cultures. As a global citizen, treating others as they would themselves like to be treated.

Please give 5 words to describe the ethos of your school.

Inspirational, dedicated, forward-thinking, accomplished and global.
