School Description

Kings Brighton provides a contemporary alternative for ambitious students who are looking for a mature yet supportive learning environment. We provide a community in which students can express their own identity and explore their interests and we support them in becoming independent learners and responsible young adults. Teachers and students work together in partnership, on a first name basis without uniforms and assemblies, exploring the subject areas to gain an in-depth understanding of the course content, and to develop and apply transferable skills. Examination structure and techniques are assessed in detail, and personal strategies developed to maximise the results achieved. Learning is contextualised to facilitate understanding and provide inspiration for students in their choices for further studies and potential careers. This is augmented by a range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to add to our students' experience and university applications. Our team of personal tutors, welfare support team and UCAS advisors monitor every aspect of our students' personal and academic development. Students are guided through their exploration of the opportunities available to them at university; identifying the most relevant options for their individual interests, learning styles and ambitions, and ensuring they are fully prepared for the application process. This includes guidance and coaching for any additional assessment or interview requirements. We provide a range of GCSE and A-level programmes to enable ambitious students to achieve their full potential and aspirations.

“Great Academic & Emotional Support”

Nigel Addison, the principal, is amazing, and really flexible. It totally felt right and he said to us “We will work with Joe to find the right pathway for him and we will customise his education for him” and I thought “This is just gold.” What Joe has had from the tutors as he has said as well as the academic support and emotional support has been great. The environment here has been amazing here too and the relationships he has made has been a great bridge for university. I am thrilled, proud and grateful. Joe has to do his part because no one can do it other than him but the infrastructure, the teaching support that he has had has been inspirational. It takes a village. C Murphy
“Progressive, Less Traditional with a Flexible Philosophy”

I was looking for a school with a more progressive, less traditional and more flexible philosophy. Albert had previously attended a number of the more traditional schools but had found it difficult to learn within the system they provided. The small class sizes and modern facilities enjoyed by Kings along with a clearly more modern approach to education were the key reasons for choosing Kings. The fact that the school is located in a major town centre with great transport links was also important. The headmaster, Nigel Addison has been simply fantastic. Nigel has always been there to guide at every juncture; unlike so many headmasters. Nigel inevitably sees the larger picture and takes actions accordingly. This measured and intelligent approach, which is so very different to what I have encountered elsewhere, has led time and time again to positive outcomes for both Albert and the school. The teachers at Kings have also been great, the personal commitment has been second to none. Kings is an amazing school run by an amazing headmaster, with great teachers and nice, albeit small, facilities. It has a large international contingent of students, something that Albert really appreciated. The school feels more like a university than a traditional school and Albert has always told me that he feels more like he is treated as an equal by his teachers rather than as a child. I feel that for a great many children Kings does offer a real alternative solution to the traditional education model. David Brotherton-Ratcliffe
“So glad we made the move”

I moved my daughter to this specialist sixth form - instead of staying at her GCSE school - and haven't looked back. It feels like they give the students much more responsibility over their learning and this seems to drive them to work hard. She's surrounded by ambitious teenagers and many of them are focused on top universities. The staff are all excellent and all her subject teachers seem interested in helping her with UCAS choices. It feels like a team effort.
“Convenient location, modern facilities and confident teachers”

We were impressed by the convenient location and the modern facilities that Kings had to offer. But the greatest attraction to Kings was the confidence that the teachers had in our ability to succeed. The dedicated teachers and small class sizes mean that every student gets an education to suit them and, with students from around the world, everybody was open and friendly towards us. Kings is located in central Brighton, an incredibly diverse place where something is always going on. Be it a festival, musical performance, theatre performance or sporting event, there is something for everyone. With so much going on in Brighton there is a large variety of people from different countries and cultures which means everyone can find a place to feel comfortable. All the staff at Kings Brighton are incredibly dedicated, even on the rainiest of days (which happen to be quite frequent...) they still manage to remain cheerful. Every teacher is truly passionate about their subject and can really relate to their students. They understand that every student is unique and has a slightly different way of learning; they really cater to this well.
“Changed my daughter's outlook on uni”

My daughter was really undecided on her next steps after GCSEs, and always felt uni was a bit out of her reach. I can't recommended the staff at Kings Brighton enough for the way they 'switched on' ambition in her – and helped her get the grades she wanted to go on to do a marketing degree. The place has got an international feel which she liked too. I think it gave her the chance to reinvent herself and grow her circle of friends which was exactly what she wanted at 16.

More information
Meet the Head: Sarah Williams

Who/what inspired you to become a teacher?

I was inspired to enter the profession by one of the Science teachers I studied with at school. Their creativity, and approach to learning made me feel curious, passionate and excited by the subject. It made me realise how wonderful it can be to really engage students on a deeper level and inspire young people to feel empowered and capable. I have been lucky enough to have been able to work with a diverse range of students, both in the UK and overseas and enjoy the challenge of creating engaging and effective learning experiences that can unlock the potential and opportunities for all students.

What achievement are you most proud of as Head?

As Principal, my role is to create an environment and community in which every individual feels valued, supported, challenged and has the opportunity to excel. I am hugely proud of the work of the whole of our team and the professionalism, dedication and commitment they demonstrate as they work to inspire and support our students. I am also extremely proud of the success of our students as they exceed beyond their expectations and progress on to leading universities for the next stage of their education and development.

There is always a very positive feel at the Kings Brighton and nothing gives me more pleasure or makes me feel more proud than having a happy and successful staff and student cohort.

What does a successful school look like to you?

A successful school is one which is well-organised, efficiently led reflective and has a sense of community and purpose. Staff and students alike should share a common aim, creating a purposeful, inclusive and respectful atmosphere with all staff and students striving to do well and achieve their full potential.

What is the most important quality you want every child to have when they leave your school? And why?

Students join us at a key transition point in their education and development; the transition from school to university, from pupil to young adult. We work to help our students develop their ability to be self-sufficient, resourceful, independent, able to take responsibility for their learning and actions and be thoughtful and respectful of others.

Please give 5 words to describe the ethos of your school.

  • Inclusive
  • Stimulating
  • Enjoyable
  • Challenging
  • Supportive
