This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

School Description

Heolgerrig Primary School is in the village of Heolgerrig close to Merthyr Tydfil. Most pupils come from the local community. The rolling average of pupils eligible for free school meals over the last three years is around 7%. This is much lower than the average for the local authority and Wales. There are currently 225 pupils on roll, including 24 full-time nursery pupils. There are eight classes, including the nursery. The school admits pupils to the nursery from the age of three. The school identifies that around 21% of pupils have additional learning needs, which is in line with the national average for primary schools. A very few pupils have a statement of special educational needs. Nearly all pupils speak English at home. A very few pupils speak English as an additional language. The school’s last inspection was in 2012. The headteacher, who was formerly the deputy headteacher, was appointed in 2015. A new deputy headteacher was also appointed in 2015. School leaders work purposefully and effectively, for example to ensure that improvements to the provision are consistent and lead to improved pupils’ outcomes. The curriculum is vibrant and teachers provide many valuable opportunities for pupils to learn about things that interest them. Adults know and care for their pupils well. As a result, nearly all pupils enjoy their learning and make good progress. Most pupils behave well and attend regularly. By the time they leave in Year 6, nearly all pupils achieve good standards in English, especially in reading and oracy. Nearly all are competent in mathematics and use information and communication technology (ICT) confidently.
