This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

How School Guide Rates Secondary Schools

The Welsh government has not published performance data for 2020, 2021 or 2022 for secondary schools.
The Minister for Education has confirmed they will return to publishing secondary school data in 2023.

School Guide uses a combination of data sources including new Estyn gradings to create its Star Ratings for 2023.

School Description

Gowerton School is an English-medium 11 to 19 mixed comprehensive school maintained by Swansea local authority. Currently there are 1053 pupils on roll which is lower than at the time of the last inspection when there were 1212. The number in the sixth form is also lower at 116 compared with 158 in 2011. The school serves the village of Gowerton itself, Waunarlwydd and the villages of the North Gower peninsula. Around 12.7% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is lower than the national average of 17.1%. Just less than 20% of pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas in Wales. Most pupils are white, British and 7.8% pupils come from an ethnic minority background which is just slightly lower than the average for Wales. A very few pupils speak English as an additional language. No pupils speak Welsh as a first language or to an equivalent standard. Just under a third of pupils are on the special educational needs register, 4.8% of pupils have a statement of special educational needs, this is higher than the national averages of 25.1% and 2.4% respectively. The school hosts a specialist resource base for pupils with autism. The headteacher took up his post in September 2016. The senior leadership team consists of one deputy headteacher, and two assistant headteachers. The individual school budget per pupil for Gowerton School in 2016-2017 means that the budget is £4412 per pupil. The maximum per pupil in the secondary schools in Swansea is £6326 and the minimum is £3942. Gowerton School is ninth out of the 14 secondary schools in Swansea in terms of its school budget per pupil. The school is currently a ‘digital pioneer school’. This means that it is working with Welsh Government and other digital pioneer schools to develop and pilot a Digital Competency Framework for Wales.

"> Teachers are really understanding and their way of teaching is really helpful. Always there to help. I passed all my GCSEs and this was mainly down to all the revision classes and great teaching.
