School Description

This is a very large and oversubscribed sponsored academy, which opened in 2007. It delivers primary and secondary education in new buildings on the same site. This is a non-selective school, within an area which has selective education from age 11. About half of the Year 6 pupils gain grammar school places and do not enter Year 7 at this academy. The academy offers early years and post-16 provision. Its large sixth form is on a separate site, known as ‘The Glassworks’. The primary and secondary parts of the academy are each led by a headteacher. There is also an executive principal in the primary phase, who is a national leader of education. She also works in other schools. Most pupils are White British. Few speak English as an additional language. The proportion of disabled pupils and those with special educational needs is about average in the primary phase. It is above average in the secondary phase. Similarly, there is about an average proportion of disadvantaged pupils, entitled to additional pupil premium funding, in the primary phase. In the secondary phase, the proportion is notably higher. The academy did not meet the government’s minimum expectation (the floor standard) for secondary pupils’ results and progress in 2014. It did meet the primary floor standard in 2014. Unvalidated results indicate improvement. The academy is likely to meet the floor standards in both phases in 2015.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

Folkestone Academy Reviews

Average Rating:

“The Folkestone Academy”
"> I have four children age 4, 6 , 11 and 17 they all go to The Folkestone Academy and in my view it is an excellent school with fantastic leadership and staff. The Academy has great facilities and a brilliant focus in the primary on reading. I wouldn't consider anywhere else for my children and didn't even contemplate any other secondary schools for my older two. The transition is so easy for the children as it is all on the same site.
“Folkestone school for girls”
"> This is truly an excellent school. I am very proud my daughter got into this local grammar school. We think the school is great and she has settled in really well.
"> I was interested to find out that my local school, Folkestone Academy, was given NOTICE TO IMPROVE by OFSTED 2 weeks ago. My son says all the naughty kids only have a few hours a week at the school in a seperate buildings because they can't handle them. If my son hadn't just finished his GCSEs there, I'd remove him and put him in one of the other Folkestone schools. What a shame!
