This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Census collected by the Scottish Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

“Disgruntled and disappointed”

"> We are the parents of a sixteen year old young adult presently attending for exam purposes, but very soon to be leaving Elgin Academy. Cons: To say that I am a disgruntled parent is an understatement. The amount of A4 paper throughout the whole Academy could not begin to do justice to the negative feedback I have for this establishment (in my opinion). From certain teachers holding qualifications but seemingly being unable to teach, with little ability to prepare themselves let alone pupils for exams or assist during exams, to qualified teachers with no ability to deal with anything out of their schedule. Given the number of teachers at said Academy against the National average this is inexcusable (In my opinion). My child has had to teach/is still teaching herself using books bought from Ebay in an attempt to bridge ever widening gaps in the curriculum of a specific science subject, this is not acceptable when it is at National 5 and Higher level. This is (I believe) due to the emphasis placed on pupils who could achieve but chose not to, or understandably those not quite so academic through no fault of their own given last minute attention in order to get a ‘result’ for school figures, while those consistently achieving are left without a paddle and left to their own devices as they are guaranteed to achieve figures for the school regardless. Pros: The teachers who, in my opinion, are exceptionally professional and have gone over and above to repair shortfalls left by others and such like in my child’s education (and who presumably have the same workload as the teachers who did not) are deserved of our unswerving and total gratitude. Summary: In my opinion, and again from experience, certain senior Staff should spend more time monitoring and being proactive regarding bullying (behind the scenes) and the competency of other staff, instead of advising children that they have incorrect socks, footwear or jackets on when they have displayed exceptional attendance and academic abilities throughout. Prioritisation, or the lack of, is questionable.
