School Description

At Chopwell Primary School our dedicated team of staff and Governors are committed to ensuring that all of our children not only achieve their full potential but do so in a caring, stimulating and exciting environment. We are extremely proud of our outstanding work in developing our children as global citizens of the future. We have achieved our fifth International School Award (2016-2019), with the study of other countries and cultures providing an innovative thread to many areas of our curriculum. In particular, we enjoy a close friendship with Amaji Elementary School in Japan which has provided pen friends and joint project work for our children and included teacher/pupil visits to each other’s school. We are also outstanding in our provision of an annual 5-day visit to France for our Year 5 and Year 6 children to promote their French language skills. We provide an excellent range of before and after school clubs, free of charge, which are open to all children. Our facilities for developing physical education and the arts are exceptional, achieving the Arts Mark Award in 2012-13, the Fair Active School Award in 2015 and the Healthy School Award 2016. We are also proud to manage Chopwell Centre for Sport, a modern state of the art fitness facility which is available to the children until 4pm. It boasts a modern 3-court Sports Hall, Dance & Fitness Studio, Function Room, 3 court sports hall and 2 outdoor Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA) available for the whole community to enjoy. We are well supported by our parents/carers and encourage them always to play an active role in their child’s education. As Chopwell is a rural village we have many close links with the local community and take every opportunity to become involved in life outside the school.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.
