School Description

Canon Pyon is much smaller than the average-sized primary school. The proportion of pupils who have special educational needs or disability is about one in 11, below the national average. The proportion with a statement of special education needs or an education, health and care plan is well below average. The percentage of pupils from minority ethnic groups is well below the average nationally. Very few pupils have been identified whose first language is not English. The proportion of pupils supported by pupil premium funding (additional funding for pupils known to be eligible for free school meals and those looked after by the local authority) is well below average. The proportion of pupils who join or leave the school mid-way through a key stage is well above the national average. Canon Pyon converted to become an academy in February 2013. It is a stand-alone academy but is also part of a federation of schools, led jointly by two executive headteachers, which make up the Herefordshire Marches Federation of Academies. When its predecessor school, also known as Canon Pyon CofE Primary School, was last inspected by Ofsted it was judged to be good overall with outstanding leadership and management. The Chair of the Governing Body was in post in the previous school. Special educational needs is coordinated across the federation of schools. Pupils are taught in four mixed-age classes. The school is supported by a school improvement adviser. There has been a falling number of pupils on roll since the last inspection. Based on their unvalidated 2015 results, the school meets the government‟s 2014 floor standards. These are the minimum standards expected for pupils‟ learning and progress in reading, writing and mathematics. Inspection report: Canon Pyon CofE Primary School, 10–11 March 2016 7 of 9 Information about this inspection The inspector observed teaching and learning in six lessons or parts of lessons, all of which were jointly observed with the headteachers. In addition, the inspector made a number of other short visits to lessons and other activities, for example to look at pupils‟ books. The inspector heard pupils read during lessons and also observed a phonics session. Meetings were held with the headteachers, deputy headteacher, other members of staff, a group of pupils and two members of the governing body including the chair and the vice chair. There were 25 responses for the inspector to take account of through the Ofsted online questionnaire, Parent View. The inspector observed the school‟s work and scrutinised a number of documents, including the school‟s own self-evaluation, improvement plan, information on pupils‟ recent attainment and progress, behaviour and attendance information, policies and procedures including special educational needs, pupil premium, sports premium, safeguarding, child protection and behaviour. The inspector reviewed the minutes of the recent governing body meetings.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.
