The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

The UTC meets requirements on the publication of specified information on its website. The UTC complies with Department for Education guidance on what academies should publish. In early October 2016, the national leader of education who had been supporting the UTC became the executive principal. Following the September inspection, the specialist leader of education who had been supporting the UTC was allocated to the UTC full time and appointed as acting principal on 1st November. She became the headteacher Inspection report: UTC Cambridge, 16–17 May 2017 Page 10 of 13 in April 2017. The UTC is smaller than the average secondary school. The majority of students are White British. A small proportion of students are known to be eligible for the pupil premium. The specialism of the University Technical College Cambridge is science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The main sponsor is Cambridge University Health Partner. The college is governed by a board of trustees who are also governors. The college does not use alternative providers, nor does it have specialist provision on the premises. Parkside Federation Academies has been contracted to provide support to the UTC. The chief executive officer of Parkside Federation Academies has taken on the role of executive headteacher of the UTC since October 2016. It is anticipated that the UTC will formally join the Parkside multi-academy trust in September 2017. In 2016, students’ progress from the end of key stages 2 to 4 led to the college being below the current floor standards.

“Fantastic for ''Focused bright students''.”

"> My daughter started 2016 in year 10 and enjoys UTC immensely. She is predicted to get As in most subjects for her GCSEs. The teaching qualities are excellent and push the children to fulfill their abilities. Read other less favourable reviews, I can't say I recognise those views for how UTC is now. If I could give any advice to any parent it would be this: look at the pass rate grades (speaks volumes). Speak to the children and parents at UTC. I would, as a parent, recommend UTC without any reservations and trust the school with my daughter's education.
“Concerned about education”

"> My son attended from the start and the school was not ready in September, finally they started and from the start I had my concerns. Teaching was hit hit and miss and my son said it was like being at primary school. On results day, it seemed like more than 50% had failed and there was no support or guidance given. In my opinion, the school was not ready to open (did not have any books in library, for example) and forgot about the learning of the children. They where more interested in getting funding from companies. My son left and has finally regained his confidence in education.
“Great for a bright, scientific student”

"> Fantastic. I can't recommend UTCC highly enough. My daughter is very interested in technology and science and felt constrained in her previous school. At UTCC curiosity is encouraged and opportunities given every day to extend learning. I am pleased that she still studies wider subjects at GCSE e.g. Geography, Spanish, English (2) - but also delighted that she is able to do extra Maths and Statistics at GCSE. She loves it academically and socially. Very pleased to recommend.
“Oh dear”

"> We enrolled my daughter for this year, 2015/2016 after being sold the project from the staff on site. We understood that it was only in in its second year so things may still not be up to speed but, goodness me, it really wasn't either what my daughter needed – or we expected. Yes class sizes are nice and small but the main problem was the level at which they started teaching. My daughter had previously been at Comberton Village College and she had covered things 2 years ago that she began to cover again at UTC. We stuck with it for a while as we considered it was just UTC assessing at what level the students where at but it never progressed. I'm sure it will improve but our daughters education comes first, and, along with 10 others, we have now left. So, whilst I wish the UTC the very best of luck in the future I would say please be very careful in what you might be giving up before you commit to UTC.
