School Description

Since April 2018, the school has been led by an interim headteacher supported by an acting deputy headteacher. Prior to this, there had been a term when the interim headteacher had led the school, due to the substantive headteacher’s absence. The interim headteacher is supported one day a fortnight by an executive headteacher employed by the trust. In the last academic year, a significant number of key staff had extended periods of absence. In the last academic year, the school had to respond to concerns about asbestos on the site. This was covered in the local press and on social media. The proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals is similar to the national average. The school is larger than the average-sized primary school. It has provision for twoyear-olds. The school joined the Bridge Trust in 2016. This trust has 14 primary schools. Inspection report: Brunel Primary & Nursery Academy, 13–14 November 2018 Page 9 of 12 Governance is carried out by the board of trustees, although certain functions are delegated to the management and local governing bodies, as set out in the trust’s scheme of delegated authority. The trust is led and managed by a chief executive officer (CEO). It has a school improvement team and a centralised business team. The school has recently begun working with a local school to provide additional professional development.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the last School Census (released annually in July).

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the last School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.

Brunel Primary & Nursery Academy Reviews

Average Rating:

“Brilliant School”
"> This is a great school and has an outstanding reputation in the community, especially for SEN. My son is ASD and the school have made so many adjustments so he can progress.
“Big disappointment”
"> Similar experience to the other reviews, biggest let down is the lack of proper leadership. In my opinion, at the helm is a person who is not fit to lead the school. Most of the teachers/TAs are ok but due to the poor management, their hands are tied to nonsense policies and procedures. Time for change.
"> Poor contact with parents with regards to important issues such as classing structures, term dates. SEN provision is poor with no regard for EHCP or Statements. The teachers and TAs are generally good but, in my experience, the school is let down by poor leadership from the Head.
"> I agree with the first review but the same goes for staff attitude which is learnt from the top in my opinion. SEN is very poor.
“Great school with 2 major let downs”
"> Lovely school with some outstanding teachers and teaching assistants. However, in my opinion, two members of staff let this school down: the Head and the SEN teacher. My experience shows them to lack a sense of compassion.
