PREP
Independent preparatory schools do not have to follow the National Curriculum
or submit test results to the Department for Education so there is no individual
school performance data or star rating.
Visit the school's website to learn more about their unique curriculum,
policies on testing and common leaver
destinations (a good indicator of pupil progress).
See our About page for information on
Choosing A Prep School.
This is an inclusive and vibrant school community. Pupils are polite, respectful and thoughtful. Around school, they share happy smiles with their friends and staff as they go about their day. Pupils feel supported and listened to by empathetic and caring staff. They do not worry about any unkindness. Pupils trust that staff will help them deal with any worries or concerns. The school has prioritised pupils’ mental and physical health. Pupils understand the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. They know how to keep themselves safe and well. Pupils behave very well and attend school regularly. On the occasions when pupils find it difficult to manage their emotions, staff respond sensitively to help pupils regulate their feelings. Pupils practise breathing exercises and enjoy taking ‘time out’ to relax in the sensory garden. The school has high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and achievement. It caters exclusively for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). However, the quality of education that pupils receive is variable. The support that pupils receive in most subjects does not help them to learn as well as they should. Consequently, most pupils do not leave school well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

“Finally found his people...”
02 December 2022AUTHOR: Samantha Ames
My ASD Son started at Birtley House having been to 3 mainstream primary schools and we were not holding much hope to be honest.
He was a complete school refuser and just the mention of school would make him ill with anxiety.
Despite my reservations, the school was very helpful and accommodating during our EHCP process and offered a place on a taster week.
My son instantly fell in love with the school. He said it was unlike anywhere he had ever been and he thought it was all a dream!
After fighting with the local authority, I secured him a place and he was eager to get back.
Since January, my anxious little boy who claimed he would never have friends, learn to read or in fact do anything positive at all, has a relatable social group, is now reading at an age ahead of his own, absolutely smashing maths and most importantly is HAPPY!
I cannot stress enough how much this school has changed our lives in less than a year and I know I am merely echoing the thoughts of other parents at the school... Birtley House is a family. Everyone is welcome, everyone is loved and everyone is smiling.
If you are looking for a SEN setting for your child, please take a look at this school.
You will not regret it.

2015 GCSE RESULTSImportant information for parents
Due to number of reforms to GSCE reporting introduced by the government in 2014, such as the exclusion of iGCSE examination results, the official school performance data may not accurately report a school’s full results. For more information, please see About and refer to the section, ‘Why does a school show 0% on its GSCE data dial? In many affected cases, the Average Point Score will also display LOW SCORE as points for iGCSEs and resits are not included.
Schools can upload their full GCSE results by registering for a School Noticeboard. All school results data will be verified.
