School Description

The school is situated in the village of Groeslon, which is approximately five miles from the town of Caernarfon in Gwynedd. There are 78 pupils aged between 3 and 11 on roll, including 14 part-time nursery children. They are organised into three mixed-age classes. The school admits pupils to the school on a full-time basis in the September following their fourth birthday. About 81% of pupils come from homes where Welsh is spoken as a first language. At present, there are no pupils from an ethnic minority background. Seventeen per cent have additional learning needs, which is much lower than the national percentage. There are no pupils who have a statutory statement of special educational needs. The individual school budget per pupil for Ysgol y Groeslon in 2013-2014 is £3,912. The maximum per pupil for primary schools in Gwynedd is £10,616 and the minimum is £2,936. Ysgol y Groeslon is in 61st position of the 103 primary schools in Gwynedd in terms of school budget per pupil. As a result of the headteacher’s long-term absence, an acting headteacher has been at the school since the beginning of the term in which the inspection was held. Gwynedd education authority has been consulting with people in the area recently about establishing a new community school in the village. The school was last inspected by Estyn in November 2007.
