School Description

The Community College Whitstable is smaller than the average-sized secondary school. An academy order was issued by the Department for Education in May 2016, with the Swale Academies Trust named as the school’s preferred sponsor. Commissioned by Kent local authority, the Swale Academies Trust has been providing school improvement services to the school since May 2016. There is, as yet, no agreed date for the school to convert to academy status. The governing body remains the appropriate authority. However, governors are making preparations to become a local governing body within the Swale Academies Trust when Inspection report: The Community College Whitstable, 20–21 February 2018 Page 10 of 13 the academy conversion takes place. The headteacher, who is employed by the Swale Academies Trust, took up her post in May 2016. Most pupils are of White British origin. A lower than average proportion of pupils are believed to speak English as an additional language. Around one third of pupils are supported by the pupil premium, which is similar to the national average. Around one in 10 pupils receives support for a special educational need, which is slightly lower than the figure found nationally. The proportion of pupils with a statement of special educational needs or an education, health and care plan is below the national average. A very small number of pupils attend alternative provision at Project 15 in Thanet or the City and Coastal College in Canterbury to receive support for behaviour and attendance or for their social and emotional needs.

"> My daughter has just started at CCW and I can wholeheartedly say we have made the right choice in placing her there. It was a difficult decision to make as she passed the Kent test and was expected to join a grammer school. We have found the school to be supportive, inclusive and have a healthy attitude to learning. She joined only knowing one other child but has quickly gained a wonderful friendship group and is certainly the happiest I have ever seen her! The old reputation of the school should not put you off as the new head is amazing and the teaching staff are excellent, they provide interesting lessons and keep my daughter excited about learning, something that is sorely missing in most schools.

"> I have known the critics of this school and must admit I have been one of them in the past. Even when the new leadership team came in I was dubious having been told before that things were going to improve. The difference is that this time they really seem to be. I now have two children here and have been really pleased with the progress they are making and in particular the pastoral care. I made the decision to send my children to a Canterbury school and accepted the places offered, understanding they would have to travel each day to get there. At this point I didn't think that CCW was the right place for them. Two and half years in and the travelling on buses, the constant poor behaviour both in and out of school and issues with bullying made me reconsider. I approached CCW as I had heard that it was transforming, I must admit I went in with a sceptical view. But what I saw impressed me so much I took both my children out and accepted the places at CCW. What I have found is a school that has high expectations of all of its pupils, a commitment to our children in making them not only achieve academically but to have them enjoy their school days. Personally, my children now walk to school, enjoy their education, actively take part in a number of after school clubs and are thriving. I am so pleased that I have made this decision, it was definitely the right one. I would recommend to any parents looking for a good school. The biggest difference is that now both my children walk out of school everyday with a smile on their faces. So pleased.

"> I am born and bred in Whitstable so am very familiar with the reputation of this school. I have to be honest and say that I was devastated when my daughter "ended up" here! BUT 9 months in and I couldn't be more happy with the way the school is being run. I really feel that the headmistress and all her staff really do care about doing their best to give our children the best education and experience possible. After difficult friendships throughout primary school, my daughter now had a wide circle of lovely friends and day after day comes out of school with a big smile on her face! She is so happy there and is thriving! My son takes the Kent Test in September and can honestly say whatever the outcome I would now be more than happy for him to join his sister. Well done CCW - keep up the good work!!

"> We are so happy that we followed our instincts, went with our wishes, and chose CCW for our Year 8 daughter. Following a turbulent few months, the new management and structure is working real wonders. Whitstable is vibrant and creative community which deserves a wonderful school to which parents can send their children with confidence. I believe we now have one and I hope increasing numbers of families will feel the same.

"> Well I have to say I am really impressed by what I am seeing and hearing. I have two children one in year 8 and one is in year 6 and is looking forward to going to CCW in September. My son in year 10 has always struggled with confidence but he is really starting to shine. He does need support and appears to be getting it which was not always the case in previous years. I went to a parents meeting last week all about how to approach and cope with revision, never had that type of support before. I'm glad to finally see the turn around at CCW just hope more people get behind it and support the children and teachers there.

"> In my opinion, the school is too focused on the high achievers and the children in the bottom sets are largely disregarded. If your child as any form of special needs, they may not get the right support here, as the new policies and curriculum appear to only work for a minority of people. If you go to an Open Day, look at the pupil numbers as ask why there's a small amount of pupils at this school. Many people are sending their children elsewhere.

"> We've always wanted our child to go to school locally and we're so pleased we stuck by our guns. At last Whitstable's Community College is on track to ensure its students make progress. Poor behaviour is being tackled and we've just had the chance to look at all our daughter's books – we're proud of what she's achieved. Books are marked and teachers are setting interesting work. We were lucky to see her in an exhibition and were so delighted by how much she has grown up there. Well done CCW

"> Since sending our first child here in 2013 and another child in 2015 we have witnessed great change with this school. Particularly in the last year. The changes within the school leadership teams and governing body have ensured that our children continue to thrive and meet raising standards by constant testing and consistent teaching. The staff continue to ensure that the children are safe and well behaved which in turn make a good learning environment. I have spent time as a volunteer within the school so have seen this first hand. Our children have many opportunities to take extra curricular activities and often do so. The introduction of a Grammar stream has recently ensured that those children who wish to excel, can and are, and a number of zero tolerance policies have made a huge difference. We must say that this school was the best choice and it must be given a chance and be allowed to prove itself, which takes time. Our children are both excelling at this school and both are extremely happy at CCW. This school is worth sending your child to and should not be dismissed without visiting.

"> It is no secret that CCW has had its critics over the past few years and to be fair with some justification. However I have had 2 girls here for a couple of years now and the improvement is clear to see. Under new leadership, boundaries are in place of which all the pupils are aware of the consequences should they choose to challenge. One of my girls is projected A's in most of her subjects and the staff are pushing her to excel yet careful not to over challenge. The other child has some educational needs which are being met by the staff and structures put in place to support her. The head has bought new staff in which are obviously rising to the challenge of turning the school around and with the continued strong leadership I am confident that it will not be long to see vastly improved result and culture within the school. Keep up the good work!

"> Complete chaos and disruption at this school. I wish I had been much more careful to send my child to this school. Some teachers try but the new head has brought the morale of the school to an all time low. Please think very carefully if you are considering this school for your child. They make a good sales job at open days but this school, in my opinion, does not match up.

"> I have very little to say that is good about this school. If I could possibly send my child to another school I would do so. There are some members of staff that try very hard to support the pupils but the majority of the staff either have given up or simply find it impossible to work under the guide lines set for them. I constantly worry about my son's future regarding exams and education. I wish i had thought long and hard before i sent him to CCW. In one term he was bullied 3 times and on 2 of those occasions violence was used, the school did nothing until the police were involved. The head teacher is very good at making things look lovely when you visit, but look deeper and you will see everything is a shamble I personally feel 1 star is 1 to many.
