School Description

The Beth Marie School is a new independent special day school situated in Sevenoaks, west Kent. It was registered in October 2012 to admit up to 24 boys and girls, aged between 11 and 14 years. The school caters for students who have experienced a history of disrupted schooling and who have severe and complex behavioural, emotional and social difficulties; a high proportion of students have a diagnosis of autism. The school is located in premises belonging to Knole Academy. It utilises additional provision at White Rocks Farm for land-based and horticultural studies; Horizons Project for carpentry and plumbing; and Sevenoaks Leisure Centre for swimming and fitness. There are currently seven students on roll, aged between 11 and 14 years. All students are boys, most of whom are of White British heritage. All have a statement of special educational need and have been placed and funded by the London Borough of Bromley. The school aims ‘to offer a programme of academic learning that is empowering and equips young people for life’. The school has recently applied for a material change to increase its age range from 14 to 16 years and its numbers on roll from 24 to 26. At the request of the Department for Education, this inspection ascertained the extent to which the school meets the requirements of the proposed material change. This is the school’s first inspection.
