School Description

The Stoke Studio College for Construction and Building Excellence is a very small specialist provider of secondary and sixth form education. It is currently operating at less than a quarter of its capacity for 300 students. This studio college started in August 2012, and is sponsored by Stoke-on-Trent College of Further Education. In September 2013 the sponsor opened the Stoke Studio College for Manufacturing and Design Excellence on a site in another part of the city. Both studio colleges are part of the College Academies Trust, linking Stoke-on-Trent College with primary and secondary academies across the city. The principal is head of both of the Stoke Studio Colleges, and was formerly a senior leader at Stoke-on-Trent College. The Stoke Studio College for Construction and Building Excellence focuses on construction and the built environment, technology, business and enterprise. It is located within the national Centre for Refurbishment Excellence which provides workshops, classrooms and laboratory facilities. Working with leading employers, students combine academic study with vocational qualifications and work experience projects. Students follow practical, applied and enterprise programmes on the Studio College site. The curriculum is planned within the CREATE skills framework aimed at developing students skills of communication, relating to others, enterprise, application, thinking and emotional intelligence. Students in Key Stage 4 now attend the Discovery Academy to follow their academic GCSE programmes, including in mathematics and English. Those in Year 10 currently spend up to four days per week at the Discovery Academy and those in Year 11 up to three-and-a-half days per week. The Studio College occupies a wing of the Discovery Academy’s new site which accommodates a team of personal coaches, meeting rooms and social areas. Studio College students are integrated into Discovery Academy classes at Key Stage 4. This arrangement started at the same time as the opening of the new site, in September 2013. Most students are from White British backgrounds. A higher than average proportion of students, over two-fifths, are eligible for support from the pupil premium (additional funding provided by the government for students known to be eligible for free school meals, children of service personnel and children looked after in public care). The proportion of disabled students and those with special education needs supported through school action is well above average. The proportion supported at school action plus is around three times the national average. No student currently has a statement of special educational needs. It is not possible to judge whether the college meets current government floor standards, which are the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress, because students have yet to complete their Key Stage 4 courses. Two students in Year 11 receive full time alternative provision off-site as a means of re-engaging them in education. Their placements have been organised through the local authority’s REACH pupil referral unit.
