Spring Hill School is a Barnardos non-maintained school. The school serves students between the ages of 9 and 19 who have learning difficulties and a wide range of emotional, social and behavioural difficulties. The majority of students have associated complex learning difficulties. The school does not use any alternative providers. All students have a statement of special educational needs. Most students are White British and none speak English as an additional language. A high proportion of students are looked after children in the care of their local authority and live on site. The proportion of disadvantaged students is much larger than the national average. These are students who are eligible for support through pupil premium funding. The pupil premium is additional funding for those pupils known to be eligible for free school meals and those who are looked after by the local authority. There are too few students in each year group to make meaningful comparisons in terms of the attainment and progress of different groups of students. Improve further the quality of teaching in order that students’ achievement continues to accelerate by: ensuring teachers adapt classroom activities to match the rate at which students are learning making sure teachers’ questioning consistently challenges and extends students’ thinking providing a balance of practical and written activities in lessons to consolidate learning.
