School Description

This school is much smaller than the average-sized primary school. It is federated with Sherburn Village Primary School. Both schools share the same headteacher and governing body. Both schools were inspected separately at the same time. The new headteacher of the federation was appointed in April 2014 as acting headteacher of Sherburn Village Primary School and will become substantive headteacher of both schools in September 2014. In the interim, Sherburn Hill Primary School is led by the deputy headteacher in post as acting headteacher. She will resume her role as deputy headteacher in September. At the time of the inspection, she had been in post for two weeks and has a large teaching commitment. During the inspection, the teacher for pupils in Years 2 and 3 and Key Stage 1 leader was on maternity leave. There have been disruptions to staffing in the classes for pupils in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Year 1 and Years 2 and 3 during this school year. Almost all pupils are White British. The proportion of pupils eligible for the pupil premium is well above average. The pupil premium is additional funding for those pupils who are known to be eligible for free school meals and children who are looked after by the local authority. The proportions of pupils supported at school action, at school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs are well-above average. There are morning, lunch-time and after-school clubs run by school staff and external coaches. There are three classes: Reception and Year 1; Years 2 and 3; Years 4, 5 and 6. Many more pupils than is the case across the country leave or join the school at other than the usual times. The government’s current floor standard does not apply to this school.
