The school is similar in size to the average-sized secondary school. The proportion of pupils supported through the pupil premium is much higher than average. This is additional funding provided by the government for pupils known to be eligible for free school meals and those looked after in public care. The proportion of disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs supported through school action is above the national average, as is the proportion supported through school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs. The proportion of pupils from minority ethnic groups is much higher than the national average, as is the proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language. The largest ethnic group in the school is Pakistani. The school’s performance meets the government’s current floor standard, which sets the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress. The interim executive headteacher works in the school for approximately one day a week. For the rest of the week, the two deputy headteachers are responsible for the day to day running of the school. The governing body has very recently been subject to an external review of governance. The findings have not been shared with the local authority or the whole governing body. Due to governor resignations, there are currently six vacancies on the governing body. Three students are educated on a part-time basis at one of three alternative off-site provisions: St George’s Academy Community Hub, Birmingham Community Venture and Pathway to Success.
