School Description

Penygraig Infants School is a community school for boys and girls from three to seven years of age. Most of the 120 pupils come from the village of Penygraig, near Tonypandy, which is in the Rhondda Fawr. Pupils are taught in four classes in a school building that was originally built in 1869. Around 47% of pupils are eligible for free school meals. This proportion is significantly more than when the school was inspected in 2004 and is well above local and national averages. All of the pupils come from homes where English is the predominant language. The school has identified 16% of pupils as having special educational needs (SEN), none of whom have statements of SEN. The school has achieved the Basic Skills Quality Mark twice. It is an accredited ‘Healthy School’ and recently gained the BECTA ICT Mark. The 2010-2011 individual school budget per pupil is £3,695, which compares with a maximum of £9,064 and a minimum of £2,553 for primary schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The school has the 39th highest budget per pupil out of the 116 primary schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The headteacher has been in post since January 2010.
