Oaklands School and Oaklands Pupil Referral Unit operate from the same site, and are run by the same leadership team and Interim Executive Board. The school and the pupil referral unit were both judged to require special measures in November 2011. Monitoring inspections took place in May and November 2012, and on both occasions the progress was judged as satisfactory. The Interim Executive Board provides governance and has been in place since 2010. The local authority has financial responsibility for the school. The school will become a sponsored academy, probably in September 2013. Some students are educated off-site for all or part of each week: two Year 11 students attend alternative provision full time. The alternative providers are Archway Academy, Blue Whale Training and Kingshurst Training fourteen students attend alternative provision for part of each week, mostly for a half day. The alternative providers are Evolution, Merlin Training and The Pump five Year 11 students attend full time at The Den, which is off-site accommodation a few miles away from the school and run by school staff. Approximately half of the students are known to be eligible for the pupil premium (additional government funding for those known to be eligible for free school meals, those in the care of the local authority or those from families serving in the armed forces), which is much higher than the national average. Most students are from White British backgrounds. All students have statements for their behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.
