School Description

The school is larger than the average-sized secondary school, although numbers of students are starting to decline. The proportion of students supported through the pupil premium (additional government funding for students in the care of the local authority, students known to be eligible for free school meals and those from service families) is above the national average. Most students are of White British heritage. The proportion of students who speak English as an additional language is well below the national average. The proportion of disabled students and those who have special educational needs supported at school action is average. The proportion supported at school action plus or through a statement of special educational needs is slightly above average. The school has specially resourced provision for students with special educational needs. This unit caters for up to 14 students who have autistic spectrum disorders. The school uses the Chesterfield Learning Community for students to learn away from school so that they can study work-related subjects throughout Key Stage 4. It has a formal support programme arranged by the acting headteacher (headteacher of St Mary’s, a school judged outstanding by Ofsted) and the local authority, to provide support for teaching English. The school meets the government’s current floor standard, which sets the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress. The school is led by an acting headteacher, who was appointed in December 2012.
