This is an average sized infant school, with two classes in each year group. It is located in an area of significant social and economic disadvantage, within an ex-mining village. Around two fifths of pupils are entitled to free school meals, which is over twice the national average. Most pupils are of White British heritage and speak English as their first language. There are a number of children from Traveller families, some of whom remain throughout the year while others return each year to attend typically from autumn until Easter. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is increasing but still below average; the proportion with a statement of special educational need is broadly average. The school's day care provision was inspected in October 2006.
