School Description

Huntercombe Hospital School Norwich is an independent day special school, co-located with its partner adolescent psychiatric hospital. The school is one of several hospital schools in the Huntercombe Group. The hospital is a child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) Tier 4 provider offering psychiatric intensive care and low-secure services. It is registered for 26 male and female pupils aged 12 to 18 years. All young people resident in the hospital are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007). All have complex social, emotional and mental health challenges, including histories of very difficult behaviour, psychosis and self-harming. A small minority of pupils have education, health and care plans; about half are in the care of a local authority. Patients in the hospital are not all immediately admitted to the school roll for reasons of health and risk assessment. Some pupils join after a period of time; others may not be declared fit to do so during their stay. All such judgements are supervised by psychiatric consultants. Patients on the psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) remain for up to 12 weeks. Those in the low-secure provision have stays of widely varying duration: an approximate average would be six months. During the inspection, the youngest pupils on roll and attending the school were in Year 10 and the oldest Inspection report: Huntercombe Hospital School Norwich, 22−24 June 2016 8 of 11 in Year 13. The large majority of pupils attending during the inspection were of White British heritage. The school received its registration visit in March 2015 when the decision was that all the independent school standards were likely to be met, and the current inspection is its first of the standard type. The staff group consists exclusively of part-time teachers with the exception of the acting headteacher. No teacher other than the acting headteacher has been in post for more than a year, The acting headteacher has been in post since November and was previously a teacher in the school. She is supported by the head of education from the Huntercombe Group. The school charges on the basis of actual attendance at lessons. The school meets requirements on the publication of specified information on its website.
